In interventional radiology, doctors use various medical imaging modalities like sonography, CT scans, MRI, and fluoroscopy (X-rays) in the cath lab to perform minimally invasive procedures through small incisions in the body. These procedures are cost-effective, less risky, and less painful than traditional surgeries, often not requiring hospital admission. They are usually performed under local anaesthesia or sedation, with only a few complex cases needing general anaesthesia. Interventional radiologists make small incisions, typically in the groyne, wrist, or abdomen, and use needles or catheters to treat various conditions, including removing blood clots, stopping severe bleeding, draining pus collections, destroying cancer tumours, opening blocked arteries with stents, and taking organ biopsies.
